Firstly, a word
about stalking ,
it’s not big and it’s not clever.
Fortunately it was caught early and no harm was done. Joseph Lewis (2 nd Cornet) won the
Youth Player of the Year and was immediately catapulted to celebrity status and
then instantly stalked by a certain female member of the band who was found to
have a photo of him as her phone wallpaper. On hearing the news Joe said “I
understand, she’s only human” as he brushed his golden locks aside and polished
his trophy.

    Heather then
awarded the Madam Secretary’s Trophy.
Heather introduced this award some years ago because she felt she didn’t
have enough to do and needed somethin g else to think about once a year. In previous years the award has been given
for all sorts of reasons, well, when I say “reasons” I mean whatever came into
Heather’s head at the time, more of a “whim” if you will. This year though things took a bit of a
serious turn in from left-field awarding the prize to a non-band-member. The rule book was hastily checked but, given Heather
wrote most of the rules, it was q uite legit and absolutely right to give it to
Mike Burt. Mike supports the band rain or shine, is always
holding a bucket at Christmas (I think h e likes the yellow hi-vis vest) and has
even stopped traff ic to keep the band safe.
Mike wasn’t able to be at the dinner and so I’ve had to use a stock
photo, congratulations and thanks to Mike.

    In other news of
the evening, it was great to see so many band supporters there and I hope
everyone had a good time. One who did was
Ros’s husband who was amazed at the golf club having a Dyson Airblade in the toilet (where
else would you put it?), I was amazed too, not at the Airblade but that there
was electricity that far out in the sticks.

The peak was the 2 nd annual (the
first was snowed-off) Christmas Concert at Farrington Golf Club on the 18 th
– thanks to Terry, Fay and the team at the golf club for helping to make it
such an enjoyable evening. Also thanks
to Denise at Sign Specialists
for the advertising banner and, of course, to all the supporters that came out
to give us someone to play to including Midsomer Norton Mayor Paul
Myers – I hope you all enjoyed listening (and singing) as much as we did
playing. I understand the producers of Michael Mcintyre ’s Comedy Roadshow
have been on the phone begging for Jo to do a turn in the next series with a
view maybe of taking over as link-man when Michael’s had enough.

           There
was also a first for the band this year with our first ever performance at
Longleat – and in front of the biggest Christmas tree in the history of the
band – for a minute I thought we were in an episode of Gulliver’s Travels. Being a weekday it was difficult to get the
band together but thanks to Jo, Heather and Colin a group of the younger
members were able to go along with Steve, Carl and Stephen Sykes – thank you
for your support.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the
band in 2011 and Happy New Year to you both.

The band brought back silverware from the 65 th South West Brass Band Associ ation Championships held in Torquay on the 5 th November. Playing ‘First Su ite in Eb’ by Gustav Holst and arranged by Sydney Herbert the band put in additional rehearsals and sectional practices working 5 days straight in the week leading up to the contest. But it was all worth it as the Newcombe Cup (left) travelled back to Radstock on the bus.
Peter Bassano adjudicated the section and said in his notes “ This was a technically competent performance with some attractive musical playing. There was scope for more excitement at times but on the whole the playing was impressive for a fourth section band ”
Jo Sykes (right) was delighted with the result and will be buying drinks all-round for the band on Tuesday night (I think that’s what she said!). Jo deserves all the credit for pushing the band to achieve higher standards and a new high point in our history. Husband Steve helped coach the band in the weeks leading up to the contest and, on behalf of the band, I’d like to thank him for his excellent advice and guidance.

I’m sure the town council will be dusting off the barriers out for the open-top bus tour – however, we’ll sort that when the weather warms up....

October News 2011

Summer has come and past, the innocence can
never last – wake me up, when September ends – so goes the classic Greenday song. You may well think I’ve been asleep for a
couple of months with no band news, well, I’m awake now and Summer has
certainly passed and even with record temperatures last weekend it’s got
decidedly chilly.

Holidays long forgotten the band launched
the Autumn season with a Prom concert on the last night of the proms and, as if
deliberately cocking-a-snoot at convention, another one a week later. Bunting and Union flags were duly draped and
waved and the crowds sang as if we were in the Albert Hall . I think half the band felt as though their
lips needed a burial at sea afterwards but great fun was had by all.

October sees our annual trip to Pensford to the Evergreen Club,
usually Trombone player Stef does a few jokes but this year he said he couldn’t
do his usual turn as he felt funny - I told him that was the point but alas the
jokes will have to wait ‘til next time.
Still, they’re all old enough, another year won’t make a lot of difference. 24 hours later the band goes on again, this
time at Cleve Rugby Club
for a Round Table Dinner – “chocks -away old chap”
for Dambusters on the tables and no doubt more flag waving – “bandits and three
‘o clock”.

Enough frivolity, we have some sad news of
some departures from the band, unfortunately over the Summer we lost a number
of players. Debbie Dring who started
with the youth band many years ago and who played Solo Cornet has left to
pursue other interests, Louis James our 2 nd Trombone (and who also
passed his Grade 8 recently – congratulations Louis) has started at Glamorgan
University – they grow up so quickly don’t they? Thank you to them both, you will be missed although
Louis will be guesting in the holidays when he’s back and we look forward to
seeing him if he can pull himself away from his beer study.

Finally in the last couple of weeks Andy
Colbourne, Percussion and Engagement Secretary has also resigned due to work
commitments. Andy has been a great
servant to the band and will be missed both for his playing and his tireless
work on the committee, thank you Andy from us all.

Now then, onwards and upwards to the Torquay
contest in November. We can play the
test piece in our sleep and some say it sounds like we do. Extra practice and sectionals – not to be mis-pronounced
- are on the cards and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to that – and before
we know it Christmas will be here and it’ll be carols in the snow, mince pies
and mulled wine and the Christmas Concert at the Farrington Golf Club on the 18 th
December – ho ho ho !

On to some more cheery news and
congratulations to our youngest member Joseph O wen -Pinkney on passing his
Grade 4 Cornet, not only did he pass but he passed with Merit - a great
achievement and better than most of the rest of the band. In fact on a recent count up of qualifications held by band members the result ranged from a fake slimmer of the week certificate
from Weight Watchers to 100 metres breast stroke, and nothing in between. Anyway – well done Joseph from everyone in
the band and the hoards of avid band news readers.
Well done to Jess Knight who performed her
first solo, Solitaire, with the band.
She’s done it twice now and it gets better every time – well done
Jess. Mind you, she has to keep on form
with that Joseph Owen -Pinkney
  coming on so quickly.

Holiday time soon but not before another gig in Wells and one in Bridgwater – see you
there.
