January News 2011
Happy New Year to all our supporters and avid readers of Band News (hi Mum)
Unfortunately the Christmas Concert had to be cancelled in December because of the bad weather, our apologies to everyone who was looking forward to it but it wouldn't have made any sense to expect everyone to come out in those conditions (and some couldn't have got there at all). Paula Kitley, who had kindly volunteered to do refreshments for the event had the dreaded flu and so couldn't make mince pies herself, so hubby and bass-player Richard Kitley purchased a load for the event which of course weren't used. Still, if anyone ever asks "who ate all the pies" at least we'll know!
Despite the weather the band still managed to get loads of caroling in - even on the green at Clutton and at Hallatrow a few days before Christmas with temperatures down to seven below zero. Jo and the Committee would like to thank all of the players and collectors who braved the elements week-in–week-out, Jo said she would like to buy you all a drink if she ever sees you in a pub, in Shepton Mallet, on a Tuesday night, in the next couple of weeks, between 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
An early Christmas present for Thomas Williams (right) our Bass Trombone player who earned himself a place in the National Youth Orchestra. Many congratulations to Thomas although I'm not sure he realises exactly how much work it will be – ahh to be young. Of course he'll need to remember to face in the direction of the conductor, sit up straight and take a pencil!
Also news of another great achievement this week, Louis James our 2nd Trombone player has passed Grade 7 with Distinction. Well done Louis from the whole band.
Finally, for those arm-chair players out there, what's your New Year's resolution- Go to the gym, give up smoking, go out and get some new friends by taking up a hobby perhaps- Well, you could give us a call and join the band, Tuesday and Friday rehearsals, it's more fun than the gym and we won't charge you £300 a year to make you go through hell, it's only a pound a week.
Happy New Decade

December News 2010
Whooosh! That was 2010, welcome to Band News for December.
There’s nothing like hearing a brass band playing carols in the market at Christmas - and there’s nothing like playing carols whilst your fingers are frozen to the keys and dangling from your lip are stalactites (or is it stalagmites- Where’s Google when you need it-).
The Advent Service at Bradford went well. Although small children walking around carrying candles in the dark isn’t something that should be encouraged, it all went off without incident.
Lots going in December you can find out where we are on the Events page but the key date for the diary is Saturday the 18th which is the Christmas Concert at Radstock Methodist Church. Tickets are £5 and there will be refreshments. The band has a number of new pieces to perform as well as some carols to sing along with and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Just before I plug the CD again (get them quick before the Christmas rush and VAT rises!), I’d just like to welcome the newest member of the band Rosalind Brooke who joins us on 2nd Baritone from the training band – the good news is she can also keep Les under control – well done Rosalind and welcome.
We’re always looking for new players but regrettably, and after careful consideration, we have decided to give the training band a break for a while. If you are interested in joining then please feel free to contact any of the players or use the Contacts page on the website. We hope to re-start the training band next year.
Hot Cakes! That’s the only thing I can compare the CD with. To ensure delivery prior to Christmas you must get your order in now.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

November News 2010
Welcome to Band News for November. What a raving success!!
October saw the band’s 30th Anniversary Concert and the Methodist Church on Midsomer Norton High Street was packed. Adrian did a fabulous job holding it all together and (apart from the band of course) the star of the show was Steve Sykes. What that bloke can’t do with a tuba isn’t worth doing – and he’s a bit of a comedian as well.
There are so many people to thank that I can’t list them here for fear of being dull (oops! too late, get on with it). But sufficient to say, thank you to everyone that played a part in making the evening a success - especially to our supporters who came along, bought tickets and made it such an enjoyable and special occasion for the band.
In the calm after the storm we get back to “the day job” and out come the carol books. Christmas starts early with the opening of the Christmas Market in Bath on the 25th then carols outside Blacks (or “Fishy Evans” in old money) on Saturday with the Advent Service at Bradford Abbas near Yeovil on Sunday 28th.
With Christmas fast approaching now is the time to get hold of your copy of On the Bandstand the band's CD. As stocking fillers go it's bound to raise a smile - and I already know someone who's getting one and I can't wait to see their face - ho! ho! ho!.
