March News 2011

A little late this month as there’s been no time for writing, only band practice.

The main news is of the West of England Area Contest held yesterday in Torquay – a glorious day out, mostly fine weather and a good vibe on the coach.  Competition was tough with 22 bands competing from an area covering 10,879 sq miles of beautiful English countryside (yes even including Weston Super Mare).  Expectation was high and the band put a lot of time and hard work into the test piece Prelude, Song and Dance by John Golland.  Drawn last there was a long time to wait and we got on stage at around 16:32 (there was clock above the adjudicator’s box!).

Did I mention competition was tough?  The band achieved a creditable 14th position which is a major improvement over our previous two contest results and is testament to the leadership of the Musical Director Jo Sykes who has brought a new dimension to the band’s preparation and after yesterday it makes the band the best 4th section band in Somerset.

No doubt Jo would have hoped for better, as we all did, but it is a step in the right direction and gives the band a platform for future improvement.  I would also like to thank Steve Sykes on behalf of the band, for supporting us in the weeks leading up to the contest; his help was very much appreciated.

Back to the day job, we have a wedding next weekend, Jess, the daughter of percussionist Andy Colbourne is getting married to Gareth – we wish them all the best.  A review of the band’s performance and photos will be available shortly in the next edition of Hello Magazine – and the bands fees will be paid out of the proceeds no doubt……

And finally…congratulations to Russell who, after several weeks of trying, finally got his whizzer working – apparently it’s all down to how hard you blow.
