June News 2011
Phew! What a scorcher. It’s official - May was Summer for 2011 - and, of course, that doesn’t bode well for the coming outdoor season. As I write the rain is beating down on the roof and it looks a bit bleak but I’m sure it’ll be fine for the Whitfunday at Somervale School on the 12th (if it’s wet the event will be held in the school).
Fortunately the Bath & West show (one of my favourite jobs of the year) was a raging success, unfortunately it was a little windy, but then if the band holds it’s annual sprout supper the night before, what can you expect (just kidding, we don’t have an annual sprout supper in June, it’s much nearer to Christmas obviously!). A good crowd on the village green were very appreciative of the bands efforts and we even had a little sing-a-long during Mama Mia with a few ladies doing their best Meryl Streep impressions – thank you to those dedicated ABBA fans.
Unfortunately I have to report that Louise Knox on Tenor Horn has decided to leave the band due to work commitments. Louise was with the band for over 2 years and will be missed and, on behalf of the band, I would like to thank her for her service and wish her all the best.
Also during May there was a bit of extra-curricular activity with school events etc. One such event was a recital evening at Somervale School where Joe Lewis (2nd Cornet) and Russell Heal (Percussion) both performed – Joe on guitar supporting a fellow student singing - unfortunately he was obscured on the video by a music stand. However, a MSNRSB exclusive is that we have Russell Heal performing live and kicking here. Well done to you both.
We also had the Bristol 10k run that three members of the band entered – and finished! Clare Knight and Mark Lewis finished in just over the hour but the naturally aero-dynamic Anthony Knight (left) whizzed round in just 45 minutes. In his post-run interview he said “I realise now that taking my bass and stopping for practice at the half-way mark slowed me down a tad”
June and July are busy for the band with only two weekends without a job. We have 4 “bandstands”, two in Wells, another one in Bath, the last in Bridgwater and then some local fétes as well.
Finally, I’d like to welcome Mark Johnson as an associate member of the band committee. Mark will be the driving force behind our Timp Fund. The target is to raise £4,500 for a new set of Timps, we’re already well on the way with a contribution from the Sperring Trust – thank you to them – and Mark will be seeking ideas and support to hit the target as soon as we can. We’ll shortly have a Timperature Gauge (see what I did there? Genius!) in the band room to track progress – Good luck Mark and the team.
